Grammy-nominated American Patchwork Quartet (APQ) joins forces with Puerto Rican cuatro virtuoso Fabiola Méndez for a powerful cross-cultural celebration of music, migration, memory, and belonging.
Led by multi-Grammy Award-winning guitarist and vocalist Clay Ross, APQ brings together some of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American roots music: Grammy-winning Hindustani vocalist Falguni Shah, internationally acclaimed jazz bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and Grammy-winning drummer Clarence Penn. Their music reimagines the American folk tradition through jazz sophistication, country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornamentation, creating a sound that reflects the extraordinary cultural mosaic of the United States.
Méndez expands that musical landscape through the rich traditions of Puerto Rico and the cuatro, the island’s iconic stringed instrument. As a virtuoso performer, composer, and educator, she brings together Puerto Rican folk traditions with contemporary influences, creating a deeply personal musical language rooted in heritage while reaching across cultures and generations.
Together, APQ and Fabiola Méndez create a compelling musical conversation between American folk traditions and Puerto Rican musical heritage. Their collaboration explores the universal experiences of diaspora, home, identity, and the search for belonging revealing the connections that emerge when distinct histories and traditions meet.
The result is more than a meeting of musical styles. It is a living portrait of cultural exchange: a celebration of the stories, sounds, and traditions that shape who we are. Through virtuosic musicianship, reimagined folk songs, Puerto Rican migration ballads, and deeply personal storytelling, American Patchwork Quartet featuring Fabiola Méndez offers an intimate and resonant concert experience that carries memory forward while celebrating the beauty of America’s ever-evolving cultural patchwork.
