Shelby Ruger is an Afro-Latina alt-R&B vocal powerhouse from Houston, Texas, whose lo-fi, soulful sound draws from influences like Frank Ocean, Justin Bieber, and Sade. A writer at heart, Shelby started crafting poems and short stories before turning them into songs during high school. She began sharing her music over type beats on Twitter and Instagram, which led to the release of her first song in the summer of 2017. Since then, Shelby has taught herself to record, mix, and produce, collaborating with rising artists like Bolaji and Destin Laurel. And producers including Koii, Rome Ladet, and Grammy winner Chris Keys. In early 2024, her song “Heartbreaker” went viral on Instagram and TikTok, opening doors to appearances on the Old Man Ebro Show, a tour opening for The Philharmonic on NPR’s Tiny Desk Tour. Her 2024 mixtape Last Night in Houston gained traction with standout tracks like “FAS,” “Is You Down,” and “Hard for Me,” earning spots on multiple Spotify editorial playlists. Now, Shelby is refining her sound and working toward a late 2026 project executive produced by Koii that will showcase her full artistic range.
Shelby also performs with her band, The Blue Moons, who sold out their first headlining show at House of Blues. Together, they’ve cultivated a chemistry often compared to The Internet, and they’re planning to push their sound even further this year.
