As demonstrated in the band’s recent single “Cruel Power,” The Happy Fits are powering through heartbreak in a healthy way by transforming their raw emotions into infectious power-pop jams. While that track served as the introduction to their new record Lovesick, today we’re getting another taste of that upcoming release with a song called “Wild in Love” that captures the “unhinged” energy at the core of the LP, as frontman Calvin Langman aptly describes it. Over the song’s three minutes, though, the quartet maintains a perfect composure through giddy dance-punk rhythms and new wave choruses.

The Happy Fits formed after national fencing champion Ross Monteith and orchestra stalwart Calvin Langman set aside their expected differences and engaged in a conversation about some of the music that they loved. Blending a love of the cello and raw rock guitar resulted in fusion that sometimes recalls the Black Keys and other times summons warmest memories of Violent Femmes. The trio (rounded out by drummer Luke Davis) is issuing a new video for the single “Grow Back”, a song that combines those influences and more.

The band kicks off the album with their latest single, ‘Around and Around’. Starting strong with a modern rock vibe, guitarist Ross Monteith playing a riff that eventually is followed by Luke Davis on drums to match the pace of the song’s intro. With lyrics such as “I can’t keep thinking about it / can’t be still anymore / no, there’s nothing so simple about it”, the song speaks to the endless cycle of life, a repeating loop in the midst of a global pandemic. This style of writing is consistent with their music, as there is usually a story to go along with each song.

“Put your hands up if you’ve never rocked out to a cello before,” The Happy Fits lead vocalist Calvin Langman asked at last week’s XOXO Tour concert while opening for The Maine at Union Transfer. With my hands in the air, I decided I’d become a cello convert. After their 2016 EP intended only for friends and family blew up on Spotify, Langman, along with guitarist Ross Monteith and drummer Luke Davis, decided to “try and make it work.” They dedicated themselves to producing songs dominated by cello, a secret weapon that is “all power chords,” making it ideal for rock music, Langman says.

My most recent time seeing the Happy Fits was when they headlined Wicker Park Fest on July 23rd. They packed the festival, and everyone in the crowd looked like they were having a great time. I’m in Blairsville, Georgia right now, with my girlfriend and her parents. It’s in the middle of nowhere. So far through the pandemic there’s only been 78 cases here. It’s actually closer to North Carolina than Atlanta, it’s right on the border. We spent the beginning of quarantine in New Jersey, because our tour got canceled. We dropped by Georgia on the way back and picked her up; she stayed with us for like two months. I just got here last Friday and I’m leaving on Monday. It’s a short 12-hour drive. [Laughs.]
THE AQUARIAN - The Happy Fits at Webster Hall / December 17, 2022
At Webster Hall, the Happy Fits demonstrated how rapidly the band has matured in a short time. The young musicians mastered stage dynamics that many older bands have yet to achieve, continuously engaging the audience through dialog and movement. (Langman impressively danced and worked the stage while strapped to a cello!) The lyrics were engaging, often exploring the transition into adulthood and adult relationships, and other times exploring the discouraging state of the world through an optimistic lens.
