At a recent Tipitina’s show, SaxKixAve, the project of rapper Alfred Banks and multi-instrumentalist Albert Allenback, converted a packed house into a fan base. They are hip hop-fluid as you haven’t heard it before. In lesser hands, this would be a recipe for a muddy mess. The high-level Al’s, though, finesse it so well. One can’t help but pause the next day with awe that what they pulled off in an exceptional way is about to thrill festival goers.

Authenticity is a fruitful topic for SaxKixAve to explore — it’s the reason Banks and Allenback work so well together and, by extension, why their music clicks. There’s a strong personal friendship at the base, a shared sense of humor and consideration of one another. It bleeds over professionally and the two have rubbed off on one another: Banks is a little less self-serious, including in his recent solo work, and he in turn has tempered some of Allenback’s absurdities.

The new single, “Mr. Apricot,” features Tank and the Bangas' singer Tarriona “Tank” Ball performing with Banks over a fast, bouncy, video game-esque instrumental track. It’s a good sampling for “I Don’t Wear Suits,” a deliberate yet lively, jazzy and often light-hearted record.
