Bio

Meet Richard Carter, a visionary artist, producer and songwriter from South Norwood, whose musical journey is shaped by diverse influences, from his aunt’s hip-hop to The Beatles and reggae from his dad. At age 2, Richard discovered a piano in the rain and has been playing ever since. His music seamlessly blends hip-hop, orchestral, pop, indie, and gospel and explores themes of mental health, love, and power struggles. With his production, he brought to life the biggest horror film of 2023, “Talk To Me”, with his track "Le Monde" being streamed over 100m times. A series of singles in 2023 and 2024 led to the Rising Star Award at the Youth Music Awards in October 2024. 2025 is set to be a breakthrough year for Richard with the release of his debut EP.

Richard Carter, who won the Rising Star award, agrees with the need for a curriculum update, and says it would have had an impact on him. "I think I’d be more in touch with the black British music that we have now. "The way I found it was just through going online, word of mouth, but it would be cool if that stuff was taught as opposed to just teaching me about Mozart and Bach. "Chuck in Skepta, chuck in Jme – you need to learn about grime because you need to understand the roots. If you don’t know the roots, you’re not going to grow."

This ‘Talk to Me’ Scene Sums up What Makes the Movie So Great
The use of music is key here as well. The song “Amen” by Mitosan is perfectly selected, as it combines something reminiscent of a carnival with that of more classical music. The scene feels more like you’re on a ride than simply watching a scene, so the circus tones feel appropriate, whereas the more traditional elements give everything a dreamy quality. There’s some modern rap going on, but Mia also sings something that sounds old-timey in another language over the light and airy melody, which demonstrates older spirits from another plane mingling with these present-day teenagers and their music taste.
